Lots of Soccer

This quarter Ian volunteered to coach two classes of kids from our home school cooperative in the basic skills of soccer. As his helper, I had a great time watching him interact with the kids and deal with the challenges that come when you give a bunch of six and seven year-old little people soccer balls in a big open area. Chaos and comedy went hand-in-hand as Ian relived his days in youth soccer from a different perspective.

His first class was mostly second graders with a few first graders.

The second class was made up of all first graders. They are standing on their "field" a big dirt patch. There is no grass to speak of in the neighborhood where we meet.

Ian's club soccer team is also still going strong and growing. His team, Third Culture Football Club, won a trophy last season, and has moved up to a higher level that plays on Tuesday nights. He had his first games in the new level last night and they won 2-0 and 6-1 with Ian scoring a goal in each game.

Ian and Rodney were also able to see Argentina and Brazil compete in a friendly match at the Bird's Nest last week! Our friend, David, who was in town, and Ian's friend Shawn went along, too.

This was the first time any of us went to an event in Beijing's National Stadium.

Ian was cheering for Argentina (He took this great shot of Messi) but Brazil defeated them 2-0.

Rodney and Dave. More about Dave in my next post!

  1. My nephew's auntie is bursting with pride! Soccer stud, ace photographer, and now soccer coach! Love it.
