Meet Our Students

Saturday was our first Discovery Club meeting of the school year, and we were thankful to be back with these precious kids and their families. We met these folks at a Chinese gathering, and each Saturday we volunteer to help them practice their English. Here is a little introduction to our group.

John

John is eight years old and likes to draw. He is our most feisty student, and is really sweet. He loves to bring food for us to try. John's parents are also eager to learn more English and they usually sit in on the class as well.

Angela

Angela is ten years old. Two years ago she lived in Washington State and went to public school for third grade, so her English is very strong. Angela's mom organizes our class and is a great help to us with our Chinese.

Lenny/Kitty/Hanna?

Lenny just turned six and  is sitting on Ian's lap in the above photo. When we first met her, her name was "Kitty," then she changed it to "Lenny," and yesterday she wrote "Hanna" on her paper. She is always entertaining!
Amy tutors her in English once a week.

Lydia and Jennifer Two

Lydia, on the left, lives upstairs from us and comes down as our faithful helper each Saturday. Jennifer Two is ten years old and likes to play computer games. She is our most organized and diligent student and always turns in her homework. She also has a great sense of humor and likes to joke around with us.

Leila

Leila is nine and is our quietest student. Drawing any language at all out of her is challenging, but she is showing signs of progress this year! She has an unusual family here, in that she has THREE younger sisters at home!
Leila's parents hope to move to the U.S. soon.

Tiger and Bill

Tiger and Bill are both ten and are best buddies. Tiger likes to swim and Bill enjoys rollerblading. They tend to goof around together, but have matured a lot since we first met them.
(And I will never get over Bill's adorable dimples...)

Jennifer One and Steve

Jennifer One and Steve came late, so we didn't get photos of them. Jennifer One is ten. She can read English very well, but tends to be shy to speak out loud. She has a sweet spirit and is always smiling.  Steve hasn't had much exposure to English, but he works hard and practices what he does know. Steve lives at a boarding school, and as far as we can understand, no longer has much contact with either of his parents. A grandmother brings him to church (where he is also good friends with Tiger and Bill) and to our class.

I hope you have enjoyed this small introduction. Perhaps if you come to visit us, you will be able to meet them in person!
